Buccal Swab Collection Instructions

  1. Obtain or request four buccal swabs for specimen collection.
  2. Have the patient rinse their mouth with cold water before they begin collecting their sample and then swallow to remove excess saliva.
  3. Have the patient use one swab at a time to collect the sample by rubbing the swab on the inside of their cheek about 20 times or for 15-20 seconds in a circular motion. They must swab firmly so that their cheek may be pushed outward during swabbing.
  4. Have the patient use the other cheek for the next swab. The same process is repeated for the second, third and fourth swabs provided to them. 
  5. Dry the swabs by shaking the swabs in the air for a few minutes.
  6. Place the dried swabs back in their original sleeves.
  7. Place the swab sleeves containing the dry swabs inside an envelope. Do not place the swabs in a plastic bag as it may cause molding. Label the envelope with the patient’s name and date of sample collection.
  8. Ship the patient’s swabs back as soon as possible after collection to the following address:
